Evidence tags: a five-state lexicon for data claims

The five evidence states KRYOS uses to qualify every claim in the registry, and why a forced choice is the foundation of a defensible position.

The five states

Observed (measured directly), derived (computed from observed), benchmarked (external reference), withheld (knowable but not asserted), excluded (deliberately out of scope).

Why force a choice

Every claim must carry exactly one tag. The forced choice is the foundation of defensibility - silence is not an evidence state.

How tags travel

Tags travel with the asset into productization, capitalization, and diligence. The buyer or insurer reads the tag set, not the marketing.

Frequently asked

Questions buyers actually ask.

Can a claim carry more than one tag?

No. A composite claim is broken into single-tag components.

Are withheld claims hidden?

Recorded internally with rationale; not asserted externally. The audit trail is preserved.

Is benchmarked weaker than observed?

Not weaker - different. Benchmarks anchor; observations measure. Both are needed.

Who assigns tags?

The asset owner with steward sign-off; disputed tags escalate to the governance quorum.

Engagement

Begin with a forensic data asset assessment.

A focused engagement that maps your data estate, scores assets against KRYOS frameworks, and produces a board-ready brief on what to recognize, value, productize, and capitalize.
